Christopher Nolan Working with a New Editor for the First Time Since ‘Batman Begins’

christopher-nolan-dunkirk-imax-sliceChristopher Nolan is making a major below-the-line shakeup on his new film. For the first time in almost fifteen years, Nolan will work with a new editor. After working with Lee Smith on every project since 2005’s Batman Begins, Nolan has recruited Hereditary editor Jennifer Lame to take on his mysterious film, which is set to get in front of cameras soon on track for a 2020 release date.

The news comes from THR, who also gives us our most enticing description of the film yet. According to the outlet, sources say “a globe-trotting adventure that has shades of the mind-bending nature of Inception”and it somehow involves the time continuum. Alrighty then.

Until now, all we’ve heard is that the untitled picture is a “blockbuster action” movie, and Robert Pattinson described the script as “unreal” — a script he does not possess because had to be locked in a room to read it. So yeah, this mind-bending time continuum tip is probably the beefiest plot description we’re gonna get for a while. Pattinson is set to star in the project alongside Elizabeth Debicki and John David Washington.

While it may not be standard procedure to cover to break out news about the comings and goings of film editors, (though it should be — they’re a silent weapon of film production that wields an extraordinary influence on the success or failure of a film and its performances,) this is a pretty big shakeup for one of Hollywood’s biggest filmmakers. Smith is the editor behind the bulk of Nolan’s most profitable and widely loved films including the entire Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, and most recently, he took home an Oscar for his precision work on Dunkirk. However, Smith just got started on Sam Mendes‘s World War I film 1917.
